Overview: How OMOPHub’s AI-Ready Clinical Terminology Platform Transforms Healthcare Data Interoperability
OMOPHub: a hosted API for the OHDSI OMOP vocabularies. Search, map and resolve 11M+ concepts, no ATHENA downloads.
OMOPHub is a managed medical-terminology API that supports clinical terminology and semantic interoperability through concept search, code mapping and vocabulary relationship retrieval. It addresses a healthcare data bottleneck: information recorded using different coding systems must be standardised before it can be combined reliably for research, analytics or AI workflows. The service provides access to OHDSI ATHENA vocabularies, including SNOMED CT, ICD-10, LOINC and RxNorm, without requiring a locally maintained vocabulary database.
Its technical approach centres on established vocabulary content and mappings rather than a documented proprietary machine-learning model. Applications can retrieve concept relationships, identify standard concepts and resolve FHIR codes into OMOP-compatible representations through an API. Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools expose these functions to AI agents, allowing conversational workflows to query terminology resources instead of relying solely on generated answers. Python, R and TypeScript SDKs support integration into existing applications and data pipelines.
The main operational benefit is reduced overhead in setting up and maintaining terminology infrastructure. Managed updates and version information can simplify vocabulary maintenance, while programmatic lookups can reduce manual searching during data-transformation development. These capabilities support more consistent coded datasets, although mapping suitability still requires assessment against the source data and intended analytical use.
Last checked on October 28, 2026: OMOPHub’s latest dated changelog entry makes ATHENA v20260829 the default vocabulary release, with Python and R SDK version 1.9.1 subsequently published on September 7, 2026.
What is OMOPHub?
OMOPHub gives healthcare data teams instant API access to the OHDSI standardized vocabularies: 11M+ concepts across 120+vocabularies, including SNOMED CT, ICD-10, LOINC and RxNorm. It offers semantic and multilingual search, cross-vocabulary mappings, hierarchy navigation, FHIR-to-OMOP resolution, a FHIR terminology service, Python/R/Node SDKs and an MCP server for AI agents.
Intended Use and Limitations
-
Its security documentation explicitly prohibits sending protected health information, patient-linked data or clinical notes through the API, defining the service as terminology infrastructure rather than a patient-data processor.
-
Published technical controls include TLS 1.2+ encryption in transit, AES-256 encryption at rest, revocable per-user API keys and OAuth2 authentication for the FHIR terminology service.
-
OMOPHub states that account information is processed in the United States and describes GDPR rights and international-transfer mechanisms; these are vendor declarations rather than independently verified certification.
-
API search terms and other request parameters may be logged, with the privacy policy specifying two-to-seven-year retention for API usage logs.
-
The terms explicitly exclude medical advice, diagnosis, treatment recommendations and use as a primary clinical decision-support system.
-
OMOPHub acts as a technical intermediary and does not grant third-party vocabulary licences; customers remain responsible for applicable licensing and attribution requirements.
-
The terms state that OMOPHub does not independently verify vocabulary accuracy, completeness or currency, making validation for the intended use a customer responsibility.
-
OMOPHub explicitly states that it is independent of OHDSI and ATHENA; access to their vocabulary resources should not be presented as an official partnership or endorsement.
