Overview: How MatrixOne’s AI-Assisted Requirements, Risk & Design Traceability Platform Supports Medical Device Development

Matrix One is a life sciences software platform whose Matrix Req product supports requirements, risk and design traceability by linking requirements, hazards, specifications and test cases throughout medical device development. It addresses the difficulty of maintaining consistent engineering records across disconnected documents and tools, particularly when a design change affects several downstream activities. A shared, versioned repository makes these relationships visible and helps identify records that require review.

Matrix Req combines linked engineering records and change-impact flagging with AI-assisted project queries. Its Matrix Mind capability allows information to be explored through plain-language questions, while changes to connected items flag affected risks, specifications and tests for attention. These functions bring retrieval and review activities closer to the underlying development records; they do not independently establish design correctness or replace engineering judgement.

Operationally, the platform can reduce manual cross-checking and make change reviews more focused by showing which linked records need attention. For example, a revised requirement can prompt review of a related risk and specification, alongside reassessment of the associated test. The practical benefits are less effort in reconciling documentation and clearer visibility into the consequences of design changes, although outcomes depend on the completeness and accuracy of the relationships maintained within the project.

What is Matrix One — Matrix Req?

Matrix One — Matrix Req is requirements, risk and design traceability software that links requirements, specifications, risk records and test cases to support design control and change-impact review. It serves engineering, quality assurance and regulatory teams developing medical devices, diagnostics, combination products and healthcare software. Its technical approach combines a versioned repository and flagging of affected linked records with Matrix Mind’s plain-language project queries and an AI checker that identifies potential gaps against user-supplied regulatory checklists.

Intended Use and Limitations

  • Matrix One lists Matrix Req as independently certified to ISO 13485:2016 for quality management; this is not regulatory approval of customers’ medical devices.

  • Matrix Requirements GmbH holds ISO 27001 certification, and the vendor explicitly identifies Matrix Req. Not Matrix Connect, as covered by its ISO/IEC 27001 certificate.

  • Matrix Req supports electronic signatures and audit trails for 21 CFR Part 11 workflows; the vendor provides validation documentation, while customers remain responsible for validating their intended use.

  • Matrix Req’s September 2026 terms state that customer data is not used to train AI models and require equivalent protections from third-party AI infrastructure providers.

  • The AI terms require customers to review and validate generated outputs before regulated or operational use; Matrix One may retain prompts and outputs internally for specified service purposes.

  • The privacy policy describes GDPR rights, subprocessors and international-transfer safeguards, including standard contractual clauses where applicable; these are published commitments rather than a GDPR certification.

  • The published privacy policy states that database content other than passwords is not encrypted at rest and that attachment permalinks can permit unauthenticated access, making deployment-specific security verification important.

  • Matrix Requirements announced a strategic partnership with medical-device and digital-health consultancy MD101 in November 2023 to combine design-control software with development and regulatory expertise.

  • Matrix One is backed by Lauxera Capital Partners and expanded through the acquisitions of dokspot in December 2025 and Simploud in January 2026, adding electronic instructions-for-use, quality-management and laboratory-management capabilities.

  • HITRUST CSF r2 certification is attributed to Matrix Connect/Galen Data, not Matrix Req, and should not be presented as a Matrix Req credential.
